This is one of Norway’s oldest open-air museums, established in 1909.
Located in Øyskogen, a park in the center of Fyresdal, with the oldest houses being from the Middles Ages, moved here from the farms from the rural district. There are new themed exhibits every year.
1500 years ago, Øyskogen was sacred grounds, and notable people were buried here. The burial mounds were moved during the Viking Period (800-1100 A.D) and used as a site for contacting the gods.
Folkestadbyen(Folkestad Village), close to Øyskogen is a unique place looking like a place in Southern Norway. The houses here were moved from the district when people started migrating “to the city”, between 1870 and 1920.
Øyskogen is open for visits year around. Guided tours and exhibits from June to August.
