Archival material created by the private sector – such as local enterprises, voluntary associations, farms and private persons – has not been systematically preserved in this region. WTM now works together with Telemark Museum in Skien and Norsk Industriarbeidermuseum in Rjukan, to make sure that historical archives from Telemark are collected, taken care of and made accessible for the public.
WTM publish a catalog of accessible archives at the museum on Arkivportalen.no. Those who are interested may come and study the material in our reading room, at the second floor of the museum building at Eidsborg. It is an important goal for us to collect more historical archives from West-Telemark in the years to come.
Communities and interested individuals have been collecting and retaining historic buildings over a period of more than 100 years at several local museum sites in Western Telemark. As much as 83 historic buildings are now under the administration of WTM, representing a great cultural value.
The structures display different functions and building traditions over a time span reaching from the 12th century to around 1970. Among these are the oldest profane wooden building, Stålekleivloftet (Vindlausloftet) dated back to 1167, and Flekstveitstoga (1750) with the first interior decoration done by a pioneer rose painter Talleiv Maalar.
